Saturday Evening

Friend Tanya and i went to a Bat presentation at the High Desert Museum.  We got there a little early, so got to wander about looking at things prior to the doors opening.

The Museum is a great place to visit and take kids.  They now have an exhibit on Bison that was very interesting.  All about the grounds they have sculptures, donated. There are also many different displays:  otters, fish in a stream, birds, porcupines, a late century city street, dioramas of the high desert, a working mill that runs twice during the summer that is GREAT to see in operation, a sheep herders home, a pioneer house and garden.  They had a presentation of wolves just a couple months ago, and a guy had been there a couple weeks ago with bats from around the world.
Tonight there was a power point presentation and talk, then we went out to different areas, by a pond, in a meadow.  They had these hand held devices that picked up the sounds of bats flying about on their nightly venture to eat insects,  i heard three of them!!!  It was really cool, like a quick staccato clicking sort of sound at 42 mgh i believe.  They are as important as bees to our society as they pollinate also and eat many insects that we really don't want about or are not good for crops. There are 13 different kinds in our area, mostly small ones.

This is rather a long blog filled with pictures, but there could be many more had i been allowed on the grounds prior to dusk :) I remember bronze statues of wolf puppies and beaver, and a life size horse out of barbed wire, that is really beautiful, believe it or not.
There are many different occasions  and events at the Museum and i really do have to try to get there more often as it is always really very interesting and educational.
Thought this fish was really a neat sculpture and just in a perfect place. Who would have thought to do this? If you are ever in the area you should consider a stop, look see, it is just a couple miles South of Bend prior to going up Lave Butte grade.

Take Care All & God Bless

  2. You have reminded me that we need to give the High Desert Museum another visit. I was there many years ago. We didn't get a chance to go the museum when we visited Redmond last summer. There's so much to see and do in your part of the state.
