Great Author-Wilbur Smith

Just finished a Wilbur Smith book, The Dark of the Sun.  Don't know what to say about this author!!  Have read him forever, my Dad and I used to share his books, even got Mom sucked in on occasion.  For high adventure and slamming action, he is the one to go to.  He writes about Africa, mostly South Africa, Rhodesia.  Historical...Warlock, Seventh Scroll and River God are about Egypt, the Nile River.  How things were settled, the cruelty of colonialism, the anarchy and degradation between the native tribes.
Having said all of that, his writing just flows, the characters are full blown MEN and WOMEN with all their foibles and grandeur.  You REALLY get to know them, some are not so lovable or endearing, but they are there, in your face.
Love, love these books.  He has been writing forever, well- since the 50's, so there are many books out there and I keep finding more, this current one was written in 1965, before cell phones, when the characters had to drive 40 miles thru the Congo jungle and natives trying to shoot them with poisoned arrows, to a telegraph office to get word out and gather help for a prolonged escape.  It was a great ride!!!  Crocodiles, mud, dirt, blood.
Be warned there are some books that are series, like about the Courtneys..that should be read in order to fully understand the sequence of events, as are the Egypt books....
If you choose to go forth....ENJOY!!!!
And for those of you, who know him, isn't he great??
Take Care All

  1. It's been such a long time since I picked up a book that I couldn't put down.....books like alot of other things, just aren't what they used to be. At least that's my take. Will be looking into Wilbur Smith...thanks Luci!

  2. Thanks so much for recommending the author Wilbur Smith! Always need good books to read. You might also like Frederick Forsyth(if you haven't read his books already). Re the aforementioned Jack Reacher, isn't he the best character portrayal ever. And how does Lee Child keep the plot so intriguing yet different in each book!?
