FIRE!!!

Our first fire of the season....  early it seems.... over 100 people / homes have been evacuated and 2000 are on standby depending on fast it moves....  these pictures were taken off the Internet... (the top picture taken from the top of Pilot Butte near downtown Bend) I went to Madras today and driving back you could see two distinct plumes and it is smokey.  I think Bend must be much worse off smoke wise than we are, BUT you can smell the pine trees burning...

The planes dumping slurry on the fires take off from the fire base in Redmond near our International Airport and we hear them pretty regularly.  There are over 300 guys out there on the fire line right now.  This is all about 25 miles from us here in Redmond.. which seems some distance, making me feel secure and LOTS of people would have to burn up before it got to us... but one would never know I guess...   But there are plenty of people that are directly in the path... and that (fire) is always a thought in the back of your mind when you live near or in the forest.... or it should be...  There are lots of programs and things a person need do to surrounding area of homes when living in the woods, like keeping all the under growth cleared and away from the home.  They even have a couple of 'free' days at the dump for people to bring in all their clearing materials.. which I have availed myself of a couple of times....  they grind it all up into compost for sale and fund raising, which is a good cause....
Just hope and pray that this does not explode and get into subdivisions North and West of Bend.  So far it has burned 6200 acres.
We had a beautiful day today, warm but not too terrible hot and temps are even easing off of that for a couple days and winds are down, so things do look fairly optimistic.. weather wise.
Take Care All & God Bless

  2. This one is definitely very early in the season for you guys. I know down in the southwest everything is so dry that we expect the place to burn up. Hope they can get it under control and contained shortly.

  3. Even if you aren't in the direct path of the fire, the smell alone would get to me. Praying that all the people and firefighters, too, will be safe!

  4. This fire is so sad. I'm so sensitive to smoke, I'd probably have to go on a vacation until they got it put out. Is this another one set by human carelessness? I sure hope not.

  5. Way way way too early. Two days ago I looked at the crystal clear skies and said to Mo while we were kayaking, "great that the fires haven't started to muck up the skies yet". A fact of life in the west, but yesterday we got the Bend smoke full force here in Rocky Point. 120 miles south. It was orange skies and strong smoke smell and was pretty scary until I finally found out where it was coming from. Still scary. Glad you are in town, Loree.

  8. I'm honored that you used one of my pictures capturing the Two Bulls Fire. It was surreal and scary watching it grow so large in such a short period of time! I have more photos of the fire here:
