Book Review

Finished reading The Story of Edgar Sawtelle by David Wroblewski...  He writes beautifully, some places you could just see and feel what he is saying or telling you. And loved that there were dogs in it.  BUT having said that, can't say I was happy with the book or the ending. I am a happily ever after type person, I KNOW things don't always work out that way, such is life, but I don't necessarily want to read about the total sadness and unhappiness of others... AND I like all my questions or questions raised by the story to be answered at the end.  You know, all tied up with a pretty bow!! Because my mind does not work the way of crime and pure evil, those are things I would not think of on my own at any time.
This was one of Oprah's book club books and I can see why.  She seemed to gravitate towards far reaching, deep thinking subjects, conjecture, personal growth, things like that. AND like I said Mr Wroblewski has a way with words.  You know how everyone feels and thinks and how the trees brood and fog raises and how a barn feels and smells.
It was a good read, but not a satisfying for me end.
Take Care All

  1. I have added this book to my library wish list, but like you, I ultimately enjoy a happy ending. I am curious, Loree, did you ever read the popular Outlander series? I am late to the party and don't usually read science fiction/fantasy, but so far I am hooked.

  3. I much prefer non-fiction, and usually a book pops up that catches my interest, although there are times when I will read the first chapter and then turn it back to the library. In fiction I like happy endings and answers to all the questions. But I tend to lose interest in the series books - read the first Outlander book and enjoyed it, but never made it through the second. It was just the same thing over and over to me.

  4. Love the Outlander Series. Saw Diana Gabaldon at the Renaissance Faire last month and was very impressed with her intelligence and humor. The folks sitting around me had seen the TV Series and said unlike Game of Thrones, it was excellent.

    1. SO, jealous that you got to meet her.... I was not a fan of the TV series, and was totally surprised. It was gritty and grimy as I imagine it was back then, but seemed they spent a lot of time on them being dirty, and there seemed a lot of gratuitous sex, for the masses, appeal. I don't mind sex n film, but it just seemed like too much for some reason. And I re-read Dragonfly in Amber and that was a big part of the book, but still... seems it could have come across differently in some way.... can't they hint at it, rather than 'being in your face'??
