Want to say something about the book i just finished reading. 'The Space Between Us' by Thrity Umrigar. It is about the caste system in India and is really an eye-opener to a middle class American, which i think i am. What a debasing way to live. What a sad comment on human behavior. Does this still go on, i wonder? The book never does have a date to it. It is very readable, the words just flow. The slum lives! You can SEE what the author wants u to see. It was uplifting as far as the human spirit goes, but very sad regarding the incidents that happen and how Bhima relates and handles them.
Very good and thought provoking read.
I am fascinated by books about life in India. Our son was dating an Indian girl for a while and it opened my eyes to the whole Indian culture and how it's so different than the way I was raised. Thank you for recommending this book. I have it on hold at the library and I saw that this author has written other books, too.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the review. I love that you have a list of the books you have been reading. I love to read so it is good to have some suggestions for different books to read. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteAfter traveling India for a month, it is evident that it is still in place informally. The disparity between the rich and poor is huge. The caste system dictated what your occupation would be and people in the service areas still can only look forward to their children following in their foot steps......
ReplyDeleteLOVE Thrity Umrigar. Her book was chosen as one of the CLSC selections at the Chautauqua Instituion (www.ciweb.org) a year or so ago and she came there to speak. Her writing is wonderful and so was she.
