Sick Baby...

On Friday (of course, just b4 the week end) Luci started exhibiting symptoms of things not being ok. She was walking all hunched over, her neck compressed, not moving, whining, shivering.  She stayed in her little bed not wanting to move.  She was walking hunched with little steps, no running.  She was eliminating ok (you know what i mean)  i watched.... was afraid she may not be peeing and it was kidney problems, but she was.  Off her food.  But then it came and went all weekend.  She still wanted to go for a ride.  She was restless too, could not settle down, but once she laid down, she was there to stay.  So, i was worried.
First thing this morning, she was the same so i called the Vet and got a noon appt.  It is her neck, she got a shot for pain and i have pain pills and anti-inflammatory meds.  You could just tell when the Doctor was trying to move her neck and manipulate things that Luci did not want to rotate her neck or move it, but she did as requested
I had given her an Aleve on Friday....well that is a no-no... that stays in their little bodies at half life for 96 hours, so a person can overdose them easily.
Also..and this is not a pleasant thing to say, but i have ALWAYS helped her up onto things by pulling on her collar, assisting her, did NOT pull if she was not poised to help by jumping up also. So it was not like i was jerking her up by her neck/collar, BUT i suppose it was... and i feel bad that i more than likely did this to her, or at least helped to cause the problem.  We were always so careful with her back and not letting her jump down or up onto things, but always lifting her, like onto the couch/bed or into the car.
So, poor Luci is under the weather and i am nursing her and holding her.  The pain seems to have abated, but then she is on drugs!
Just hope this is going to solve the problem and i am getting UP and lifting her into the chair with me, think i will even take off that collar, so i don't inadvertently revert to bad behavior and there is NO handle there to use...
Take Care All & God Bless

  1. OH dear poor Lucy. Taking off the collar seems like a good idea. Perhaps the pain meds will relax her so that if it is a pulled muscle or something it will heal. Glad you took her to the vet. What does s/he think it is??

  2. Oh, poor baby Luci. Don't feel bad, though, you were trying to help and didn't know. I'm so glad she is feeling better, even if it is because of the drugs. Can you get a little step stool with non-slip treads for her to walk/climb up to get on the chair?

  4. So sorry to hear about Luci. Maybe a harness rather than a collar would help. Hope she gets better soon.

  5. Sometimes we just don't realize. Here's hoping the meds work and she' back to normal sooner than later.

  6. Hope your baby gets better soon. It's so obvious you'd NEVER do anything to hurt her.... but here's a hug for you and her!

  7. Sure hope she is feeling better soon. We started using a shoulder harness as soon as we took over Halley. Just as you mentioned, I was afraid I would unintentionally hurt her neck. I can, if I need too, lift her right off her feet or pull her out of harms way without fear of really doing damage.

  9. I'm sorry about Luci--it always makes me sad when I hear of a pet that's not feeling well. Please don't blame yourself, though. All of us who read your blog know how much you love her. After all, she wasn't yelping or giving you any indication that helping her with the collar was hurting her.

The harness sounds like a good idea. Hope she's feeling much better by tomorrow. I'll be reading and keeping up.

  10. Oh Luci baby. I'm so sorry you're hurting. And Loree, you didn't do anything wrong. These doxies of ours can twist wrong just walking and hurt their backs and necks. How well I know. Scooter was laid up for over a week this last time but now she's back to thinking she's a puppy most of the time. Once they start to feel better it's hard to keep them quiet. But just give her lots of loving which I know you do.

  11. It seems to be a common thing now, as Cooper has recovered from a back injury.
He was jumping into a chair and missed and he yelped and knew something was wrong. We watch them all the time but sometimes it just happens. At Walgreens they have little steps for $10, and they work great for them to get up on the furniture and down again. Our little doxies love to go and down them.
    Get well soon Luci!
